Professor Gary Mortimer

Board Chair, Independent Director

Professor Gary Mortimer joined the SaCSA Board on 4 May 2023, and is currently Chair of the Board and a member of the SaCSA Audit and Risk Committee.

Gary is a Professor of Retail Marketing and Consumer Behaviour at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT).

Prior to joining QUT, he spent over 25 years working with some of Australia’s largest general merchandise and food retailers.

Over the past 15 years with QUT, he has worked closely with the National Retail Association (NRA) on multiple industry research projects and the Australian Retailers Association (ARA) as Chair of the Consumer Research Advisory Committee. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed journal articles, generated over 200 published retail industry insights, and attained successful grants worth over $1.75 million. Gary also sits on the editorial board of the Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services.

His research impact is demonstrated through government citations, industry conference presentations, invited industry speaking roles and significant domestic and international media coverage. Widely recognized as Australia’s leading retail marketing and consumer behaviour expert, he is a regular commentator across mainstream media, newspapers, current affairs, television, radio and trade publications.

Gary continues to work closely with the retail sector through consultancy arrangements, chair and directorships, and keynote addresses.

Gary holds a PHD in Marketing and Consumer Behaviour, a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) and a Graduate Certificate of Academic Practice (University Teaching).
