Project Overview

The project will provide an evidence base to better understand how occupations are evolving, where skills gaps exist, and how education and training can better support industry needs now and into the future.

Through research, industry consultation and occupational analysis, the project will examine workforce capability requirements, current training products and the role of non-accredited training across the sector. The findings will help inform future workforce development initiatives and potential updates to the SIF Funeral Services Training Package.

Why this project matters

The funeral services, cemetery and crematorium sectors play an essential role in supporting Australian communities. As workforce needs continue to evolve, industry requires education and training pathways that reflect current practices, emerging technologies and changing service expectations.

Current enrolment and completion levels within SIF Funeral Services qualifications remain low, and only a limited number of Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) deliver these qualifications. Before any future training package updates can be considered, further investigation is needed to understand:

  • current and emerging workforce requirements
  • changes to job roles and occupational functions
  • skills and knowledge gaps across the sector
  • the impact of regulation and policy on workforce capability
  • how industry currently develops skills through both accredited and non-accredited training.
