Exploring the Drivers of Beauty Workforce Shortages

The beauty industry is vital to Australia's Personal Services sector, but skills shortages are threatening its future. SaCSA is exploring the drivers of these shortages to find solutions that will attract, train and retain a skilled workforce.

Overview

The beauty industry is a cornerstone of Australia’s personal services sector, supporting small businesses, self-expression, confidence and wellbeing for millions of Australians. Yet, the sector is under growing strain from workforce shortages.

SaCSA’s Exploring the Drivers of Beauty Workforce Shortages project focuses on three priority occupations: Hair or Beauty Salon Managers, Make-Up Artists, and Beauty Therapists. These roles are critical to the success of businesses and the sustainability of the industry, but are increasingly affected by:

  • Skills gaps and limited career pathways
  • High attrition and barriers to re-entry
  • Leadership and management challenges
  • Pay, conditions and workforce culture issues

This work will ensure that industry insights directly inform future workforce planning and policy, helping to build a stronger, more resilient and skilled beauty workforce.

This project will:
