Identifying Training Solutions Relating to Drink Spiking and Alcohol Related Violence

We are leading an important national initiative to identify and address the education and training needs of the Hospitality industry relating to drink spiking and alcohol-related violence.

Project Overview

Since 2003, drink spiking has been recognised as a serious and emerging threat to the safety of Australians, prompting national research and policy focus. Drink spiking is a criminal offence across all Australian states and territories, with penalties including significant fines and imprisonment, ranging up to five years depending on jurisdiction.

Given varying state and territory policy positions on drink spiking, this project will play a critical role in bringing government, industry, and workers together to develop a training solution that is relevant, compliant and adaptable to diverse regulatory environments.

This project aims to support the safety and wellbeing of patrons and workers in hospitality venues across Australia through a collaborative, research-driven approach.

This project aims to ensure:

Collaborative Engagement

Work closely with government regulators, legal counsel, industry stakeholders and worker representatives to co-design a training approach that supports a consistent, nationwide response to drink spiking and alcohol-related violence

Legal Compliance

Ensure all proposed training solutions comply with relevant legislation and mitigate any risks of unintended consequences, such as new or increased liability for hospitality workers

Industry Support

Build on the strong sector-wide support for practical, effective training that enhances safety and fosters community confidence in hospitality venues
