Scoping Service Sector Futures: Career Journey Mapping

We're mapping career journeys to strengthen pathways across the Personal Services, Retail, Tourism and Hospitality sectors.

Project Overview

Across the service industries, many roles are viewed as short-term or entry-level, with limited visibility of how workers can progress over time. This lack of clarity makes it harder to attract people into the sector, retain experienced workers and build strong pathways into skilled and leadership roles.

The project is addressing this challenge by building a clearer, evidence-based picture of how people enter, move through and progress within careers across the Personal Services, Retail, Tourism and Hospitality sectors.

Through this project, SaCSA will develop visual career journey maps that show how education, training and work experience connect over time. The mapping will draw on national data and industry consultation to highlight common entry points, progression pathways, career transitions and points where people are more likely to leave the sector.

The project will also examine how career journeys differ for priority cohorts, including First Nations peoples, culturally and linguistically diverse communities, people living with disability and people with low foundation skills, to better understand the barriers and enablers shaping workforce participation.

By making career pathways more visible, this work will support better workforce planning, inform future training and qualification reform, and help industry, learners and training providers make more informed decisions about skills development and career progression.

This work is being delivered as part of the approved activity Scoping Service Industries Futures: Career Journey Mapping.
